My blog was neglected as life continued to blaze ahead. The girls have grown, and we even added a new girl. I can't possibly recap six full years of our life, but I can share what my heart has learned. I hope to do just that in this new space.
I got a little stir crazy this afternoon and walking the halls just wasn't going to cut it so I went down to the gift shop to browse a bit. It feels so good to actually feel good after surgery. I also feel pretty rested and I'm very ready to settle into our new normal at home.

My dad and Ann have been taking care of Olivia and have been such a tremendous help to us. Reid's parents were in town until this afternoon and Olivia got to spend some time with them yesterday. She's been very well taken care of by all her grandparents and I'm pretty sure she hasn't thought twice about us. Out of sight, out of mind.

She has had a cough for a few days so Reid took her to the doctor this morning. Sure enough the cough is just allergy related but sweet girl has her first ear infection. The good news is that she hasn't run a fever and was able to get antibiotics to treat it.

For all the change Olivia has experienced the past few days she's done really, really well. I worried so much the past few months that I wouldn't be able to enjoy my time in the hospital with Mary Brooke because I'd want to be home with Olivia. While I do miss her, it has not even been an issue. Reid and I were talking yesterday about how amazing it's been to know that Olivia is well taken care of and content. Thank you Pawpaw and Grandma for all the peace of mind you have provided us! And thank you to Nonni and Poppi for your help, as well!

Olivia loves her little sister. She was less interested in her tonight and much more interested in the sucker we had waiting for her. :) All in all I don't think we could have asked for their introduction to have gone any better. Olivia loved giving her sister hugs and pointing out her nose and mouth. I have a really cute video I'll try to get posted soon.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4869535932241472332.post-60033803415922543312013-11-17T17:23:00.001-06:002016-04-07T11:44:47.110-05:00Welcome, Mary Brooke! Our sweet daughter made her grand entrance into the world early Saturday morning, November 16. I went to bed around 11 pm and woke up just after 12:15 am when my water broke. We quickly packed bags and got Olivia ready to drop off at a friends house on our way to the hospital. It was so surreal! We made it to the hospital a little after 1 am and things moved pretty quickly from there. Mary Brooke was born at 2:34 am via c-section, weighed 7 pounds 2 ounces and was 19 1/4 inches long. She's a pretty good size baby for being born at 36w2d. She has done amazingly well and we are so grateful!

Two big things about her birth I want to share. Both point to the goodness of God and the fact that He is in control of all things. I had prayed from very early on in this pregnancy that my water would break in the weeks leading up to my scheduled c-section. Reid and I both talked often about how we would love to have that experience and it be exciting, not terrifying like last time. In the grand scheme of pregnancy that was really a small detail, but God can do anything. It was just one more way He has used Mary Brooke's arrival to bring beauty from ashes. The second thing is that when the doctor delivered Mary Brooke the cord was wrapped around her neck three times, basically forming a noose. He told us today how dangerous that could have been. I really was surprised she came as early as she did. But, now thinking about it, clearly God knew what we didn't, was in control once again, and allowed her early delivery to keep us from what could have been a very devastating situation. Today I am in awe of the many ways God has shown His character to us through Mary Brooke. She is such a treasure, our precious gift, and we love her dearly!
We did have a little "scare" at 24 weeks. Really, it just came down to me not knowing what a normal pregnancy felt like. This baby is a mover and must have been doing flips or something that caused a super weird sensation. But, after a few hours and tests in L&D one Saturday afternoon we learned everything was perfectly fine.

To be honest, I think a lot of why I haven't blogged much this time around is because I still worry from time to time that everything has been too perfect. It's been hard to go from a worst case scenario to a normal one. I feel extremely grateful and my doctor reminds me with every visit that God has been so gracious to us. And He has, don't get me wrong. Worry crept in at the very beginning, literally the moment the "yes" showed up on that little stick. I prayed constantly those first few weeks as I tried to combat horrible anxiety. The Lord was definitely faithful to help me overcome so many of my fears. I finally came to the realization that I could literally worry about everything - would I miscarry, would she be healthy, would I go on bed rest, could preterm labor happen again, and on and on. Or, I could admit that there was really very little within my control and find comfort in knowing my worry couldn't and wouldn't change God's plan for Mary Brooke. The freedom that has come from that realization has been so redeeming for me. It definitely doesn't mean that all my worry just disappeared, but I know now I have to surrender those fears.

We feel as ready as we can be to meet our fifth daughter. I've tried to imagine what her birthday will be like, how different it will be from the days we delivered her sisters. I had to stop trying to imagine it because it makes me so emotional thinking about how that day will bring everything we've gone through full circle, Lord willing.

We had several 4D sonos between 28-34 weeks. At 34 weeks Mary Brooke's weight was estimated to be just over 6 pounds. From what we can tell she is going to be a good size baby with chubby cheeks and a head full of hair. We can already tell she has my nose and looks a lot like Olivia.

I'm not sure how much Olivia really understands when we talk about baby/sissy/Mary Brooke. If I ask her where the baby is she will usually lean down and hug and kiss my stomach. If we are out and she hears a baby crying or sees a baby she pats her own stomach. :) She loves to read the book "You're Getting a Baby Sister." And, go figure, she's very interested in all the baby gear we've gotten out.

Mary Brooke,
We are so excited to meet you! I can't wait to see exactly what you look like and get to learn how to really take care of a newborn. Your daddy talks almost everyday about how excited he is to snuggle you. We love you so much already, sweet girl.
Love,
Mommy

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4869535932241472332.post-11284795445555033452013-08-26T20:03:00.000-05:002013-08-26T20:03:02.389-05:00Grandma AnnLet me first start by saying this is one of the many posts that is long overdue. I'm hoping to get caught up in the next few weeks with all the happenings of this year!

In June 2012 my dad was set up on a blind "date" with a lady named Ann. They had never met which is extremely strange for two people who have lived in Little Rock, what I will always consider a small town, their entire adult lives. They both went into the meeting with the expectation that, at the very least, this person would be a fun friend to go to dinner, movies, etc. with. Well, they instantly hit it off that night and have been together ever since! My dad proposed just before Christmas and they were married at their church, in a simple ceremony with just the two of them and their pastor, on Valentine's Day of this year.

I could go on and on and on about how amazing Ann is and how lucky we ALL are that she's part of our family now. She is one of the most genuine, caring people I have ever met. From the beginning she accepted Reid, Olivia, George, Jenny, Eleanor and me and treated us as if we were her own. I'll give you the perfect example: After they were married my dad sold his house - the house my brother, sister and I had lived in our entire lives. The thought of clearing it out was a daunting prospect and thinking about memories of your childhood being packed away was really sad. But, Ann made it her mission to make their "new" house a blend of both families. My sister called me one day to tell me that our baby portraits, my wedding portrait, other snapshots of our family life, and familiar furniture were scattered throughout the house. It meant so much to all of us that she made the house feel like we'd always been there. Back in March Olivia and I went for a visit. I asked Ann one afternoon if it was OK if a friend stopped by and she looked at me with a smile and said, "Of course, but you don't need to ask me, this is your house, too!" It really is the little things that make a person feel welcome and Ann is always thinking three steps ahead to make sure that's exactly how we feel.

Ann, we are all so thankful and blessed that Dad found you! Thank you for being such a wonderful person and for all the many ways you have enriched our lives! We love you!

It's crazy to think we are now past the point at which Olivia, Madelyn and Mary Grace were born. It's crazy to know exactly what the baby inside me looks like. It's all just crazy. There are a lot of thoughts that have been swirling around my mind the past several weeks. I've felt sad for Olivia that her first months of life were so rough. I think back to those first few months of her life - all the poking and prodding, the machines and wires - and it breaks my heart that she didn't get to stay tucked away in my womb for longer. That's one of the things her doctors always told us in the NICU, no one has figured out how to recreate the womb. I had a lot of anxiety as we approached 22 weeks (the date my water broke with the girls). I've had nothing but great reports from my doctor, but it's really hard to try to reason or distract yourself from worry when you've lived through a worst case scenario. I have to make a conscious decision every single day to take things one day at a time. While I do have hard and fearful days I have to say that this pregnancy really has been bliss. I have felt such an overwhelming sense of thankfulness for a healthy pregnancy. Just the little things like going to the Arboretum on Saturday with my family and being able to comfortably walk around. Being able to chase Olivia around the house, play on the floor with her, or swim at the pool. Being able to ride to (and around) White Rock Lake on my new bike (thank you again to my sweet husband!). The list could go on and on, and I don't take a second of it for granted. So here's to three more months of pregnancy, Lord willing. Can't wait to see what making to full term is like!
That date was July 30. We would find out a few weeks later that making it full term wasn't going to happen while carrying four babies. Still, everything we did revolved around that date, how early they would be born was measured from that date, and, even now, everything we work on developmentally with Olivia is measured by that date.

Last night a website called Still Standing Magazine reposted a month old blog entry on Facebook. I don't think it was by coincidence that it showed up in my news feed. I think, on the eve of what would have been my girls' first birthday, God knew I needed to read it. It addresses so many of the lies I still battle to overcome. If you've ever lost a child - whether miscarriage, stillbirth, or any age after birth - I hope this touches you as it did me.
It's been two months and there's lots to catch up on!

Lets start with the biggest happening - Baby #5! Everything is going really well. I feel great and often times still forget I'm pregnant. This time around has been so much easier on my body and I'm grateful. I've been able to work out doing non-impact activity (think bike and elliptical) but considering I could do nothing last time this has been great. I will be 18 weeks along on Thursday and we have our big u/s to find out the gender. I don't have a hunch either way and can't wait to find out who this baby is! It is crazy that in just 10 more days we will be to the halfway point. December will be here before we know it!
Here are a few belly pics for good measure. The pic on the left is with the girls and on the right is #5. See why I can forget I'm pregnant? :)

Olivia is just amazing! July 16 marks one year since we brought her home and July 30 would have been her first birthday had we made it to her due date. I've found myself overwhelmed with thankfulness these past few weeks thinking about all of the unknowns we faced a year ago and for all the answered prayers we've seen in her life. She is remarkable, resilient, determined, feisty, FUNNY, inquisitive, very loving, a mover, loves to dance, wave "hi", clap her hands, crawls FAST (mostly like a little army man), loves the water, loves Samson and other dogs, loves to read books (especially Olivia Counts), she loves to jump and climb, pulls up on everything and is starting to cruise along the furniture, loved to walk behind her push toy until it fell over on her :( , she's a great sleeper and takes two naps a day, she loves her Bitty Baby and Jellycat toys (she sleeps with her bunny and pig - it's so sweet!), loves to "shake, shake, shake" anything that makes noise, her favorite show is Dora, loves going on walks, she learned to give kisses and especially likes to kiss herself in the mirror (what can I say, even she knows she's something special!), she regularly says "mama", "dada", "night night", shakes her head "no". She has said "hi" and "no" but not regularly and not always in correct context. She's a pretty good eater. She completely weaned herself the beginning of June and didn't seem phased - for which I was very thankful! She's taking ~3 bottles of pediasure and eats 2-3 good/big meals a day with a little snack in between.

There's lots more to share but I'll try to write separate posts for more of her highlights.

God has blessed our family with quite a surprise! Olivia is getting a little brother or sister in early December. We are thrilled!

As of today I am nine weeks along. We went to the doctor several weeks ago and were able to see the tiny bundle and hear the heartbeat. Everything looks great and we are so thankful!

I'll share more details in the next few weeks. :)
We also hung a "big kid" swing next to her baby one so we can swing along with her. She thinks its lots of fun!
She also likes to go pretty high. I'm sure there is some sort of rule about not pushing a 13.5 pound baby as high as I have been. But, she doesn't seem phased. :)
I seriously can't believe a year has passed since our baby was born. It is unreal!

We had a wonderful day celebrating Olivia. We started with brunch at one of our favorite Dallas spots, Oddfellows. I love their chicken and waffles and knew that Olivia would, too. ;) She didn't waste any time digging in.

After brunch we made a quick stop at a local children's boutique to buy O her first pair of sandals. They are a size 0 (smallest they make) and are the tiniest, sweetest, light pink sandals I've ever seen. She immediately brought her foot to her mouth and used them as a teether. Whatever makes her happy! :)

We spent some time playing with her new birthday present before naptime! She absolutely loves it and even sat on her own for the first time while she was playing. Such a big milestone reached on her first birthday!

After an afternoon nap we met some close friends from home group and college for pink cupcakes at a park near our house. I didn't get pictures, but Olivia enjoyed her first cupcake (topped with whipped cream).

Reid, Olivia and I headed to Blue Goose for an early dinner. This girl loves tortillas and people watching!

Our friends Katie and Todd stopped by to say hello. They brought their dog, Ellie, and Olivia couldn't have been happier about it. This girl loves dogs!
Dinner was followed by a bath and bedtime. It was the perfect day and she was in such a good mood for all of it. It's a day Reid and I will never forget. We are so thankful for her life and the plan that God has for it! We love you, Olivia!!!

We had a great Easter Sunday! It is so hard to believe it was Olivia's second Easter - Madelyn, Mary Grace and Olivia were born on Good Friday. Last year, on Easter Sunday, Madelyn went to be with Jesus. What a comfort it is that on the day of her death we are able to rejoice with HOPE in the GIFT of ETERNAL LIFE made possible by JESUS CHRIST. God sent his Son, Jesus, to bear the sins of humanity and die upon a cross. In taking our sins upon himself, he conquered death as we know it. For those who believe

I love the words from one of the songs we sang at church on Sunday. Over this past year it has become one of our very favorite songs.

"Christ is Risen"

Let no one caught in sin remain*
Inside the lie of inward shame
We fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to him who showed great love
And bled for us
Freely you bled, for us

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave!

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave!

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bow to none but heavens will
No scheme of hell, no scoffer's crown
No burden great can hold you down
In strength you reign
Forever let your church proclaim

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave

Oh death! Where is your sting?
Oh hell! Where is your victory?
Oh Church! Come stand in the light!
The glory of God has defeated the night!

Oh death! Where is your sting?
Oh hell! Where is your victory?
Oh Church! Come stand in the light!
Our God is not dead, he's alive! he's alive!

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with him again
Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave

Rise up from the grave...

For Cate, because she passed away the day before she was born, I always think of today as her "heaven day."

This morning I got a text from my friend, Lauren, with this picture.

Her little girl, Harper, sent balloons to her friends. Lauren told me that Harper said Cate would love the princess balloon. I think she's right!

I just want to say "thank you" to all of our sweet friends who have called, sent texts and emails, and have thought of ways to honor our family over the next few weeks. It means so much to us!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4869535932241472332.post-67607440633639775822013-03-26T20:57:00.001-05:002013-08-26T20:14:22.873-05:00Love my girl
I don't think she was very happy about the change. Usually when she's mad and crying I find her struggling to push them down so she can see out. I was almost to the point where I thought it really wasn't worth it to have them in there when I found her all snuggled up to the side of her crib. At first I thought it was just a fluke but she's started working her way into that same position every night since. I love that she likes to snuggle up. Sweet girl is such a little love!
We decided to head out for a family date night at Taco Joint. Olivia had her first bites of chicken and cheese quesadilla and loved it (not surprising). And this girl is all about the people watching... I have no idea where she gets it. ;)

Last Sunday we started transitioning to crib naps. Up until now she's slept on me for every single nap. While I wouldn't change that sweet time we've had for anything, I knew it was best for her to learn to sleep on her own during the day. We had several "cry it out" days, but she's really done so well. And, the past two days she's gone down without a peep. I'm so proud of you, Olivia!!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4869535932241472332.post-49914074336173737632013-03-06T10:15:00.000-06:002013-03-06T10:27:46.570-06:00Months 10 & 11

Olivia is 11 months old! Oh, what fun she is these days. A lot has happened these past few months and since I skipped the 10 month post I'll just dive right in and try to re-cap all of it.

- Stats. Olivia weighs 13 pounds 1 ounce and is 26 inches long. She is wearing size 3-6 or 6 months clothes. She wears a lot of one piece outfits or dresses. Her waist is so small that most pants fall right off. However, Zutano pants fit her perfectly. Love that brand! She is also wearing size 2 diapers.

- Diapers. Oh, the diapers. This past month we had a little issue with Pampers. Olivia had been wearing them since 23 weeks gestation in the NICU and they were fine. Then, in February she developed a horrible rash that presented itself when we started a new box of diapers. It wasn't like normal diaper rash and it was all along her lower abdomen. Nothing made it better. After a trip to the doctor and many questions to Google I found out that she wasn't the only baby who had a reaction like this. Reid and I agreed it was most definitely an issue with the diapers. I immediately went to Whole Foods and bought Earth's Best chlorine-free diapers and within 36 hours of the switch the rash looked SO much better. Two weeks later it is completely healed. And, I can't tell you how happy I've been with the Earth's Best brand!

- Teeth. Little Miss O is a teething machine. She has her bottom middle teeth and is getting her top lateral incisors (the two on either side of her top middle teeth). The top middle teeth are going to come through any day now. Fingers crossed.

- Sleep. See diapers and teething. Bless her heart. For the past month (maybe longer) we've totally regressed in the sleep department - like, she's probably only slept through the night five times. I'm terrible at the whole cry it out thing. And, on top of that, knowing her reason for waking was likely because her teeth hurt or her rash bothered her when she wet her diaper made it completely out of the question. The past couple of nights we've been slowly getting back on track. She goes to bed around 7:30pm, wakes at 5am to eat, and goes back to sleep until 8:30am. She usually takes one morning catnap and we've been transitioning to afternoon naps in her crib over the past couple of days, as well.

- Food. We introduced pureed baby food in January and she hated it. Gagged, spit it out, and cried until I would nurse her. After a not so great month in the weight gain department her doctor suggested that we move on to table food. Boy, am I glad we did because she loves it! So far her favorite foods are turkey, chicken, broccoli, sweet potato, avocado, apricots, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, oatmeal and all flavors of Yobaby yogurt. So far she's eating two meals a day - lunch and dinner - and this weekend we are going to introduce egg whites at breakfast. She gained well at our last doctor visit so all of her hard work has payed off! On top of the two meals a day she is nursing 5-6 times a day for about 15-20 minutes.

- Development. Back in December we started getting therapy evaluations. Her pediatrician didn't see the need, but for our peace of mind we wanted to get a foot in the door at the private therapy center we would use if a need were to arise. After several months of hounding him for a referral, he finally humored our request. Olivia has been evaluated for occupational, physical and speech therapy. She tested either right on track or a little ahead for her adjusted age. Each therapist gave us milestones to watch for and so far she is hitting all of them earlier than expected. She isn't sitting on her own quite yet, but she is going to be crawling any day now. I think she could sit on her own it she slowed down enough to really try. As soon as she's on the ground she wants to move onto her stomach so she can push up and rock on all fours. She is one determined child and it has been so fun watching her figure out how to do new things. We continue to be so in awe of her!

Olivia,

I can't believe we are one month away from your first birthday. You are such an expressive, sweet, and happy girl - an absolute delight! People often say that the days are long, but I haven't found that to be true. Our days fly by and most nights I find myself wanting to go wake you up and rock you just to get the chance to be with you again. I sit and watch you play, moving around as busy as can be, and I look at you with such wonder. It is hard to believe that whether or not you would be here today was ever a question. My sweet girl, I want you to know that God has something very special planned for your life. You are marvelous, Olivia Bain, and I'm so very glad you are mine. I love you as deep as the ocean and as high as the sky!

Love,

Mommy

Here is a glimpse of our days via iPhone pics...
Swinging fun! My dad and Ann gave Olivia a swing for Christmas. We couldn't find a great tree to hang it in so Reid and his dad built a swing set. We love our backyard and its so nice to have something to play with back there.
Snuggling in Mommy's lap. She is my little cuddle buddy.

Can't keep her on her play mat. She scoots all over. She also loves practicing her "superman" moves. She's usually squealing and bouncing up and down flapping her arms.

She loves Samson so much. Samson, on the other hand, could really care less. But, he is very gentle and tolerates her extremely well. If we are playing on the floor he is usually close by trying to make sure they get equal attention.

She was pulling her camera off the crib (and was SO pleased with herself) so I mounted it. If this picture was a video you would hear her crying and throwing a fit when she realized she couldn't reach the cord anymore. The girl is determined and has liked having "projects" since she was teeny tiny - in the NICU she would slowly work her feeding tube out with her tongue, for example. (And, the monitor cord was not as unsafe as it sounds. Promise.)

Every morning I bring her in my bed for her first feeding. After she eats we snuggle and play in the big bed. It is one of my favorite times of our day together.
We finally have the food thing figured out and she loves mealtime! Especially getting to feed herself!

She is big enough to sit in her big girl stroller! We love going to Rusty Taco and sitting outside on their big patio. There are certain places in my mind that don't have germs and this is one of them.
And, her two favorite people in the world! :)

Olivia,
It is such a privilege to get to stay home with you and capture all of these fun memories! You, sweet girl, mean more to me than you'll ever know. I love you as deep as the ocean and as high as the sky. You are a treasure, my precious baby, and I still can't believe you are mine.
Love,
Mommy
She didn't act like she loved it but she also didn't cry. I'll take that as a win! I disinfected the swing like a crazy person and we stopped as soon as other kids came to play. I'll be so glad when RSV season is over and we won't have to be so neurotic about germs! Hurry up April and lots of park play dates with friends!!!
I love that she likes to cuddle and lounge around with me. We were in bed and she was alternating between watching her friend "fan" and smiling at me. Love this girl so much!
Olivia spent the morning with her wonderful babysitter that comes every Thursday to give me some time out of the house. Reid went into work a little late and we were able to spend time together as a family before getting the day started. While I was out I dropped by Baylor to take some treats to our L & D and NICU nurses. I feel like that place is our second home, and so many of the nurses there will always have a special place in our hearts. This evening we spent time playing at home. Reid grilled chicken kabobs and veggies for dinner and we made margaritas (my favorite). It was a wonderful day!

I took some festive pictures of Olivia wearing her Valentine's gift from her Gigi (my mom's sister). Thank you, Gigi, for sending such an adorable and thoughtful gift!!!
